Effie Florence (Noseworthy) GarnerFebruary 3, 1928 ~ August 17, 2017 (age 89)
Effie Florence Garner, age 89, of Elwood, departed this life to enter into eternity at 7:36 pm on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Community Parkview Health and Living Center in Elwood surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 3, 1928, the last of 8 children to Samuel and Amy (Knight) Noseworthy in Pouch Cove, Newfoundland, Canada.
Our Mom lived her early years in a quaint and beautiful cove by the ocean, a place filled with fishermen, their wives and children. The people of the cove were a down-to-earth, hard-working, fun-loving, and truly gentle folk. We always knew that her unique way of looking at life was greatly influenced by being born and raised in such a special place with such special people.
She met her husband, James "Bob" Garner, when he was stationed in St. John's, Newfoundland, in the U.S. Army. They fell in love and, at the young age of 18, she left her quaint little fishing village and her family to travel to a strange new land to begin a new life and a family of her own with her husband. They became the parents of 5 children and lived their first years together in Anderson, Indiana. They later moved to their dream home on South I Street in Elwood. They were together for 57 years, until Dad passed from this life on August 27, 2003.
She was truly a unique person, living all these years away from her Newfoundland family in a land that in many ways still seemed strange to her; she became a special part of so many lives. Making many friends through the years, people seemed drawn to her and her unusual outlook on life. She was always able to laugh and enjoy life, regardless of the circumstances. She loved to cook; her specialties were chicken and dumplings, fruit pies that she often gifted to friends and neighbors, and her peanut butter fudge was the "best ever". She also had an amazing ability to grow vegetables, flowers and trees of all kinds. She would often be seen busily working outside in her yard when the weather was warm. She also enjoyed quilting and made many of those as gifts for her family and friends. She quietly lived her life as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, never being happier than when she felt needed and could meet those needs for her family.
She will be sadly missed and remembered always by her children, Timothy (Cheryl) Garner, Christopher Garner, and Mary (Jim) Shrock, daughter-in-law, Julie Garner, grandchildren, Gabriel (Jennie) Garner, Marni (Matt) John, Kristen Garner, Lauren Garner, Ross (Mariah) Garner, Hailey (Andy) Harris, Amy Shrock, and Jamie(Bob) Stafford, great-grandchildren, Megan, Katlyn, Hayden, Elli, Hannah, Grace. Emily, Eddie, Pazley, Rozzley, Lakin, and Paxton. She is also survived by special cousins Marjorie Carver and Vera Staubitzer, many nieces and nephews who have been a special part of her life, wonderful neighbors who have blessed her beyond measure, and friends too many to name.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, infant son, Kenneth Samuel, first-born son, Bob, parents, Samuel and Amy, and siblings, Alex, Jen (Albert), Harry (Elizabeth), Eliza (Pat), Gus (Evelyn), Blanche (Jim), and Albert (Florence).
To honor our Mom's final wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service following her cremation. She requested that her remains be buried, along with those of her husband, under their favorite Kentucky juniper tree. There will be a private gathering for her immediate family at a later date.
"Her children rise up and call her blessed." (Proverbs 31:28)
