Jerry M. Davenport, age 79, lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in Peru, IN after an extended illness. Jerry was born on April 27, 1938, in Elwood to the late Idress and Nellie (Wilson) Davenport. Jerry served his country as veteran of the United States Army and the National Guard. On April 27, 1957 he married the love of his life Mary (Porter) Davenport.
Jerry retired from the Elwood Community Schools where he worked as a custodian for over 25 years of service and retired from Kroger Grocery. He also was employed by the Elwood Call Leader. Jerry enjoyed bowling, shooting pool, chopping wood and carpentry. He also liked to minister to people.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife; of 61 years, Mary (Porter) Davenport of Elwood, daughter; Lynnette (John) Sease of Peru, three grandchildren; Sean Davenport & (Heather), Jessica Martin & (Martin) and Sarah (Robert) Deaton, fifteen great grandchildren; Braydon, Haleigh, Adriana, Jayden, Draven, Mya, Kyan, Reagan, Aleanna, Julia, Adan, Kyler, Mareya, Bryleigh, and Chloe, three sisters, Barbara (Keith) Barber, Rebecca McCray and Debbie King, several nieces & nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; Idress & Nellie Davenport, brother; Landie "Buck" Davenport, and sister; Linda Benefiel.
Funeral service celebrating Jerry's life will be at 1 PM, Friday, February 2, 2018 at Dunnichay Funeral Home, Elwood, Indiana with Pastor Jack Bess officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood Cemetery with military graveside conducted by the US Army and the Elwood VFW American Honor Guard.
Visitation will be Friday, from 11 AM - 1 PM, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1113 S. Anderson Street, Elwood, Indiana.
