J. Ferrill Wittkamper

J. Ferrill Wittkamper passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family after a long well-lived life.  He was the first-born son of Joseph H. and Agnes L. Mock Wittkamper, North West of Elwood, IN in rural Tipton County on November 21st 1923.  Ferrill attended Reeder School for eight years where he played the accordion and sang with the Wittkamper Children’s Orchestra.  
Ferrill graduated from Elwood High School in 1941 and moved to Ft Wayne, IN to attend International Business College and Durbin Dance Studios.  After receiving a diploma in Accounting, he was drafted into the US Army and sent to Ft. Wolters, TX in March of 1943. Ferrill received an honorable medical discharge in August of that year.  He returned to the family farm in Tipton County and met the love of his life Joan Fuller of Swayzee.   They were married on February 16, 1944 and in 1946 moved to a vacant house with little acreage in Madison Township, Tipton County where they raised their 4 children Karen, Tonda, Duane and Debra.
He was a member of East Main Street Christian Church Choir, Elmaco Singers, Elwood Toastmasters, Tipton County Farm Bureau, member and chairman of Tipton County Health Department and a seventy-year member of the Elwood Lions Club. Ferrill retired from Continental Can Company after 32 years in the Elwood plant. He was a partner in Wittkamper Associates where he specialized in insurance, taxes, real estate and appraising. Ferrill was also a hog and grain farmer most of his life.  Ferrill started playing golf later in life and he and Joan spent their winters in Sebring, FL.  He spent time managing 2 rental homes, mowing his yard and roadside.  He enjoyed crossword puzzles, listening to the news and the History Channel on TV.  Ferrill and Joan traveled all of the USA states and visited sites in Canada, Mexico, Haiti, the Caribbean and Europe.  He enjoyed camping, boating and water skiing with his family at Dale Hollow Lake in Kentucky. 
Survivors in addition to Joan of 73 years include son, Dr. Duane Wittkamper, (wife Deborah) of Largo FL, and their children Myles Wittkamper (wife Deirdre), of Parrish FL, Shandra Younts (husband Matthew) of Kingwood, TX and Kim Bray of Largo, FL; daughter, Debra Leathers (husband Jeffrey) of Cedar Grove, KY and their 3 daughters, Kimberly Lucy (husband Aaron), Dr. Carrie Leathers (husband Melvin Garcia) and Joanna Yarbrough (husband Stephen) all of Indianapolis; son-in-law, Dr. Gerald Pratt of Dallas, TX and his children daughter Emily Pratt (husband Aaron Kind) of Montana and Jarvis Pratt of Lubbock, TX; son-in-law Jim Fulkerson of Kirkland, IN and his daughters Michelle Ridenour (husband Bryan) of Kirkland, IN, daughter Lori Hazlett (husband Justin) of Indianapolis and Amy Brumfield (husband Jess) of Wyoming.  Great grandchildren include: Hunter and Whitney Ridenour, Skyler and Zoe Hazlett, Elaina Leathers and Gianna Garcia-Leathers, Benson Lucy, Kayleigh and Hudson Wittkamper, Kensley Younts, Kierren and Kyler Branch, Oliver Yarbrough, Daisy and Silas (Pip) Kind, and Lachlan Brumfield. Survivors also include brother Marvin Wittkamper. Ferrill is predeceased by his loving daughters Karen Fulkerson from Frankfort, IN and Tonda Pratt from San Antonio, TX; and sisters Louise and Bernita; and brothers Loren, Dwight, Maurice, and Eldon.   Ferrill will be greatly missed by his numerous friends and family.
A funeral service to celebrate Ferrill’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday September 21, 2017 at Dunnichay Funeral Home with his grandson-in-law, Pastor Stephen Yarbrough officiating.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday September 20th at Dunnichay Funeral home in Elwood. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park with military gravesite rites conducted by the United States Army.  
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Curtisville Christian Church or the Elwood Lions Club through the funeral home.  Online condolences may be given at
