James (Jim) F. Hoose
May 20, 1933 - January 10, 2020 (age 86)
James (Jim) F. Hoose, 86, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2020 with his family at his side. His battle with dementia has come to an end.
Jim was born on May 20, 1933, the oldest child of Peter and Hazel (Patterson) Hoose. He was a lifelong resident of Elwood.
As a youth, Jim raised his pony & horses, attended St. Joseph Catholic grade school, helped in his father’s gas station and worked at his uncle’s ice cream shop. Jim graduated from Elwood’s Wendell L. Willkie High School in 1951 where he was a member of the conference champion football team. He then earned an accounting degree from the Professional Accounting School of International College in Ft. Wayne in 1954. Jim proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1954-56 during the Korean War. He was stationed in Tokyo, Japan as a Morse code operator with the Signal Corps.
Jim married the former Dolores (Dee) Altherr on June 7, 1958 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tipton. They shared nearly 61 years of marriage together before her passing in May of 2019. When Dee faced her own battle with dementia, Jim was her constant companion, rarely leaving her side.
Jim worked for several years as an accountant for Zimmer Industries and Hoosier Home Improvement. He then returned to his family roots and was the owner/operator of Hoose DX and later Sunoco full-service gas station from 1969-1985. He retired as a service advisor from Dan Young in Tipton in 1991.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and VFW. He had been an avid bowler at Lucky Strike Lanes for many years. Jim’s hobbies included fishing and woodworking and was known for his witty one-liners. In the winter, he kept busy with many jigsaw puzzles and worked in his large garden and yard in the summer. After retirement, he was a handyman and became the caretaker for several of his neighbors and Forest Hills Estates where he resided for 55 years. Jim was a huge fan of NASCAR, especially driver Dale Earnhardt. He enjoyed watching the Colts, Pacers and IU basketball.
Jim is survived by his three children: Amy Tourbier of Wisconsin, Matt (Mary Ann) Hoose of Elwood and Jill (Scott) Weddell of Tipton; five grandchildren: Shane Hoose of Kentucky, Krista (Curtis Stout) Hoose of Elwood, and Cameron, Alec and Grayson Weddell, all of Tipton. A sister, Louann (Bert) Poi of Arizona; sister-in-law Martha Coppock of Tipton; special family friend Crystal Cancio of Elwood; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and son-in law Bruce Tourbier.
