James Everett Shelton, known as Jim by many friends, age 80, of Kimmell, IN and formerly of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at his daughter's residence following an extended illness. He was born on January 6, 1939, in Albany, KY to the late Homer and Maudie (Wright) Shelton, where he remained until he moved to Indiana as a young adult.
Jim retired from General Cage after 31 yrs of service. Prior to, he also was employed at Swihart Manufacturing. In later years, Jim had his own lawn mowing business and became a ordained minister where he served as pastor at different times. Jim was a strong believer in his faith and attended several churches throughout his lifetime. His hobbies included working in his woodshop where he made bird houses, wishing wells, and shadow boxes for nursing homes throughout the state. Jim also enjoyed going to Auctions and flea markets. He was a vivid animal lover and had several pets his life. Jim enjoyed spending time outdoors, working in his yard and garden and just sitting on his porch visiting or watching traffic go by. He also enjoyed going to church. He was a gun collector, although he never shot them. Mostly, he enjoyed his family and going places with his friends.
Jim is survived by his wife of 22 yrs, Diana, two daughters, Sue Ann (Dan) Crooke of Kimmell, IN, and Brenda Singer of Elwood, four grandchildren; Cory Summers of Elwood, Cody (Jamie) Summers of Cicero, Chase Singer and Dakota Singer of Elwood, One great-grandson, Mason Summers, Step-son, Andy Collins of Indianapolis, two sisters, Ruby Nell Jones of Albany, KY, and Brenda (Jerry) Jones of Albany, KY, several nieces and nephews and his dog Pete.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Maudie Shelton, first wife of 24 yrs, Carolyn Shelton, brother, Ken Shelton, two sisters, Ethel Brown and Carlene Bell, several cousins and childhood friends.
Funeral services celebrating Jim's life will be at 1:00 pm Thursday, June 20, 2019 at Dunnichay Funeral Home, Elwood, Indiana with his nephew Pastor Scott Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 19th, 2019, from 4:00 pm -8:00 pm, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1113 S. Anderson Street, Elwood, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elwood Animal Shelter.
