Merrill  Hughes, age 79, life long resident of Elwood, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at Riverwalk Village in Noblesville following an extended illness.  Merrill was born on October 8, 1939, in Rigdon to the late Burnice and Mary (Hueston) Hughes.  On April 10, 1970, he married Pamela (Wise) Hughes.  Merrill served his country in the US Navy.  He retired from Red Giant where he worked as a truck driver for many years.  Merrill first started driving for Fettig's, Red Gold and then Red Giant.  He won the Safety  Driver of the Year award several times throughout his career.  In his younger years he enjoyed the outdoors playing golf, fishing and hunting.  He was a member of the Elwood VFW, Elwood Elks, the Eagles and a former member of the Elwood Country Club where he volunteered many hours building on to the back of the club house.
Merrill is survived by his wife, of 49 years, Pam Hughes of Elwood, two daughters, Sheri Dwiggins of Elwood and Cathy Hughes of Pendleton, two sons, Mark Anderson of FL and Todd Anderson of Elwood, five brothers, Mark Hughes of Elwood, Bill (Peggy) Hughes of Elwood, Allen (Anita) Hughes of GA, Dennis (Jackie) Hughes of Elwood, and Roger (Rita) Hughes of Warsaw, grandchildren, Jacob Dwiggins, Veronica Reynolds and Clay Anderson, three great grandchildren, and several nieces & nephews.
Merrill was preceded in death by his parents, Burnice & Mary Ellen Hughes, brothers, James & Larry Hughes and a sister & brother in law, Janet & Ed Stage.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM, Friday, July 26, 2019, at Dunnichay Funeral Home in Elwood.  Burial will follow in Knox Chapel Cemetery with full military honors provided by the US Navy and the Elwood VFW honor guard.
Visitation will be Friday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
