Larry I. Brooks, age 84, of Elwood, passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by his family on Tuesday, October 26, 2021. On June 26, 1960 Larry married Vickie C. (Cook) Brooks and they shared 61years of marriage together. Larry was born in Greentown, IN on May 26, 1937, he was the son of the late Russell and Rev. Helen (Hull) Brooks.
Larry attended schools in Florida and Elwood and was a member of the class of 1955 at Wendell L. Willkie High School. While in high school, Larry displayed a passion and talent for music and was awarded first-place in a school band contest playing the trombone for his music teacher, Mr. Cliff Brugger.
Larry honorably served in the Army National Guard. He attended the Church of God in Florida and in Indiana. Larry had a strong work ethic throughout his life, being a newspaper carrier for the Elwood Call-Leader, Ex-Cel-Lo, he was a member of the Bob Nance Construction Company, he purchased and sold cars, he enjoyed restoring classic cars, was the Service Manager for Leisure Living, and ultimately the owner of Custom by Brooks RV's.
When Larry wasn’t busy working, he took pleasure in being a member of the Vintage Motor Bike Club where he owned a Cushman cycle. He was a business sponsor for the first woman's softball league and where his team, “Custom by Brooks,” became city champs. Larry also enjoyed bowling, camping, fishing, boating, water skiing, traveling to different parks and visiting family all over the country. He especially enjoyed swap meets and shows and going to antique telephone meets with his son Marty.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Vickie C. Brooks; and his son, Marty I. Brooks, both of Elwood, IN; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Along with his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his three sisters, Betty JoAnn Brooks, Rosanna Leah Brooks and Donna Lou Alexander; and his two brothers, Raymond and Russell Brooks.
Larry's family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Bob Helm, Kerry Kane and staff and to Ascension at Home Together with Compassus for their excellent care.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021, at the Elwood Cemetery with Pastor Rick Shuler officiating. Dunnichay Funeral Home is honored to care for Larry and the Brooks family.
