Morris "Gene" Herkless, age 89, of Elwood, peacefully passed away at his residence surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, November 21, 2021 following an extended illness. Gene was born in Delphi, IN on December 28, 1931, to the late Carl and Eva (Hanlin) Herkless. He graduated from Wendell L. Willkie High School in 1950 and attended Anderson College for two years. On June 26, 1955, he married Geneva (Smith) Herkless and they shared 66 years of marriage together.
Gene proudly served his country by serving in the US Army during the Korean War. He retired in 1997, from General Motors after 35 years of service. He was a faithful member of East Main St. Christian Church, the Elwood VFW, American Legion, and the UAW #662. He enjoyed his famed Indianapolis 500 pace car, visiting with his friends and loved spending time with his family.
Gene is survived by his loving wife, Geneva Herkless of Elwood, IN; daughter, Rhonda (Shawn) Howell of Greenfield, IN; two grandsons, Ryan (Carrie) Henson of Alexandria, IN, and Ben Howell of Greenfield, IN; two great-grandchildren, Casey and Carl Henson; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Mae Utt.
Visitation will be Wednesday, November 24, 2021, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, at the Dunnichay Funeral Home, Elwood chapel. Funeral service celebrating Gene's life will immediately follow the visitation at 1:00 pm at the Dunnichay Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Gardner officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Anderson with full military honors conducted by the US Army and the Elwood VFW Honor Guard.
