Thomas Edward Hires, 81, of Frankton, IN entered his Heavenly Home on April 12, 2022, as a result of congestive heart failure.
Born in Elwood on May 14, 1940, Tom attended Frankton High School and was editor of his senior yearbook in 1958. He also helped produce the school paper, and was business manager of his class. Tom was a 4-H Junior Leader, and the coach for the Farmers Grain & Coal Co. Little League baseball team.
After high school, Tom worked for Continental Can in Elwood. He joined Delco-Remy on production in 1960 before attending apprenticeship school to become a sheet metal tinsmith welder. He retired in 1998 after 38.3 years of employment. During retirement, he volunteered to work on homes affected by Hurricane Katrina and with the Lakota Indians in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Tom married the love of his life, Janis Dissette, on June 17, 1962, and they raised their family in Frankton. They were happily married for 51 years until Janis’s passing in 2013. A member of Anderson First Church of the Nazarene, Tom served as a greeter, a board member, and volunteered his craftsmanship for the church and members of the congregation. Tom was brilliantly skilled in every aspect of construction, remodeling and repairing. If he could not fix it, then it could not be fixed. He truly was a jack-of-all-trades and a master of all of them.
Tom was an avid bird watcher and thoroughly enjoyed gardening and researching genealogies. For 75 years, he shared the produce from his gardens with numerous neighbors, friends and family. He was a member of the Frankton History Club, as well as the Madison County Amateur Radio Club with call sign AA9ZA.
